How to install dacort's free mermaid on your PC.

First of all, you need Poser 4 and all of its original files, of course, and dacort's Mermaid file available for download at 3D Commune. Next, you will need WinZip in order to extract the files. If you do not have WinZip, I suggest you download it from CNET.

Once you have the above, begin by accessing Windows Explorer on your PC.
Look under C:\ -> Program Files -> MetaCreations (or Curious Labs) -> Poser 4 -> Runtime -> Geometries -> P4NudeWoman

¤ In that folder, you should find a file called "P4NudeWom.obj".
¤ Right-click on that file and click "Copy".
¤ Then, click anywhere in that folder and right-click and click "Paste".
¤ Rename "Copy of P4NudeWom.obj" as "dcMermaid.obj". Make sure you spell it exactly "dcMermaid.obj".

The WinZip file was not set up to extract in the right folders automatically. You will need to do this manually and make sure all the files are where they need to be. Therefore, create a temporary folder on your C:\ drive and extract all the files from the zip in it. Once you have transferred all the required files, you can delete this folder if you want.

Following the layout of the folders in that temporary file, transfer the files according to this:

dcMermaid.cr2 into C:\ -> Program Files -> MetaCreations (or Curious Labs) -> Poser 4 -> Runtime -> libraries -> character -> dccustom

dcMermaid.rsr into C:\ -> Program Files -> MetaCreations (or Curious Labs) -> Poser 4 -> Runtime -> libraries -> character -> dccustom

dcMMBump.bum into C:\ -> Program Files -> MetaCreations (or Curious Labs) -> Poser 4 -> Runtime -> textures -> dcmermaid

dcMMTextureGold.jpg into C:\ -> Program Files -> MetaCreations (or Curious Labs) -> Poser 4 -> Runtime -> textures -> dcmermaid

dcMMTextureGreen.jpg into C:\ -> Program Files -> MetaCreations (or Curious Labs) -> Poser 4 -> Runtime -> textures -> dcmermaid

dcMMTextureOrange.jpg into C:\ -> Program Files -> MetaCreations (or Curious Labs) -> Poser 4 -> Runtime -> textures -> dcmermaid

dcMMTransOther.jpg into C:\ -> Program Files -> MetaCreations (or Curious Labs) -> Poser 4 -> Runtime -> textures -> dcmermaid

dcMMTransPoser.jpg into C:\ -> Program Files -> MetaCreations (or Curious Labs) -> Poser 4 -> Runtime -> textures -> dcmermaid

You can safely ignore the rest of the files that are located in the "dcmm10 -> extras" folder. You won't need them to make the mermaid work:

mmRead_me.txt (you should read this file, though, for the instructions and copyright notice).
dcMMBump.jpg
dcMMHighlight.jpg
dcMMOverlays.psd
dcMMTemplate.jpg
dcMMTransOther.jpg

You can choose to transfer the files either by "cutting" and "pasting" them or just dragging the files to the appropriate folders. Teaching you how to do this would be an entirely different tutorial. If you do not know how to transfer files on your PC, I suggest you make a search on the net for a tutorial on how to do this.
That's it! Your mermaid should be installed properly now!

¤ To apply the textures provided with the mermaid, load her in Poser (she should be under "Figures", "dccustom").
¤ Once she's on your screen, click on "Render", "Materials".

Follow instructions with Fig. 1.

1. In the "Surface Material" screen, click on "Load" and choose a texture from the C:\ -> Program Files -> MetaCreations (or Curious Labs) -> Poser 4 -> Runtime -> textures -> dcmermaid folder.

2. Next, click on "Texture changes apply to entire figure".

3. Click "OK".

These steps will basically just add a texture to your mermaid. To take it further and add a bump map of scales on the scales of her tail, go back into "Render", "Materials" and do the following:

Follow instructions with Fig. 2.

1. First, uncheck "Texture changes apply to entire figure" (the texture has already been applied to the figure and we don't want to add scales to the entire model).

2. In the Material drop down menu, select "scales".

3. Under "Bump Map", click on "Load" and find the file called "dcMMBump.bum".

4. Adjust the "Strength" of the bump map.

5. Click "OK".

Now, it make not look like anything happened but when you render your mermaid, you will see she has lovely scales on the scales of her tail ;o)

Oh! By the way, the above instructions work just the same for dacort's SeaNymph! Enjoy!
